NYC Pier 55 Project Update: January 2020
Here are some recent pics of our activity at ‘Diller’s Island’. What you see is the growing elevated Southwest corner of the pier, and subsequently the massive Black Locust timber we are working with being lifted into place by a crane. Black Locust is locally sourced and by using it in lieu of tropical hardwoods the rainforests are better preserved.
Why Black Locust Timber?
Black Locust has high natural durability, is heavy and hard, is not going to rot and is insect resistant. Black Locust is also cost-effective and is better than concrete in terms of its compression, strength, and flexibility. Black Locust is locally sourced and by using it in lieu of tropical hardwoods the rainforests are better preserved.
